Synopsis: "Forward-thinking director Lois Weber spins two controversial morality tales in 1914's Hypocrites and 1916's Eleanor's Catch. In Hypocrites, an art-loving priest is stoned to death for placing a nude statue in the town square; the statue then comes to life whenever one of the townsfolk acts hypocritically. Eleanor's Catch tells of a woman from the slums turning the tables on a neighborhood thug who's taken advantage of her boyfriend's absence." "Strange""Lois Weber’s classic, Hypocrites, was summed up in one word as strange. Lois Weber was a Evangelion who probably went door to door preaching whatever Evangelical beliefs she held. I have no idea how this was translated into a career in film. Anyway she became a filmmaker and made uber Christian movies. “Hypocrites” starts off with a righteous preacher giving an epic speech during Sunday sermon. The church goers don’t seem to care and there are various shots of yawning and quiet murmuring between “dissidents.” Eventually the preacher takes a direct whack at the church members basically calls them out on the stupid and evil stuff they do. Obviously the people hate this and want to get him fired. After the sermon, the preacher sees a bunch of kids reading a newspaper. He flips out as if they’re were looking at a Playboy. I mean really, its just a newspaper. Anyway, this is when the preacher looks at the paper and zones out. I mean I think he smoked something. During his zone out he imagines himself walking around and sees various church members and the preacher urges them to climb a hill. Two women follow him, but the rest find some reason or another to avoid climbing. The two women climb and I think one of them got really tired and straight pooped out. So we have this epic religious metaphor for following the narrow and straight path, but honestly I did not get the random naked woman. If the movie is so religious, why is there a naked woman walking around? I don’t know. I obviously did not like the movie, mainly because it was a waste of time, brain cells, and film. For realz, Lois?" by uziiman on Mon May 9th, 2011 0 Comments | Reply | Report |
