Synopsis:
"Director Robert Bresson -- via a deceptively successful minimalist approach -- brings high drama to this true tale of a French prisoner (Francois Leterrier) and his single-minded determination to escape from a Nazi prison cell in occupied France during World War II. A prodigious achievement and a truly enthralling film."

"Allegory of freedom"

"The compressed concentration Robert Bresson gave images and sounds made him one of a few film makers who was able to reveal the indescribable.

On his way to prison, Fontaine, a member of the french resistance, sees an opportunity to escape when the car he is being brought in is forced to stop. Unfortunately he his instantly detained, beaten up, handcuffed and taken to solitary confinement. During the silent and lonely days he spends in his cell, Fontaine begins to think out a detailed escape plan.

Robert Bresson's classic drama about the adept escape plan of a death sentenced prisoner forgoes within restricted areas, is a demanding though rewarding movie experience and a study of the artistic aspects of Cinema. His efficient accentuation of sounds upsets the strained and characteristic stillness which creates great tension. The main character who is the films enduring center, is consistently followed, and together with Francois Letteriers confidential voice over, Robert Bresson's masterful filmmaking style gives the viewer a feeling of reading a novel consisting of living images and sounds.

Robert Bresson's subtle, minimalistic and compassionate hymn to the freedom of mankind, examines themes such as solitude, isolation, dreams, friendship, deprivation of freedom and hope. His frequent use of long takes, limited dialog and quiet pace creates a hypnotic effect which paves way into the main characters mind. Robert Bresson's fascinating perception of detail and acute camera movements affirms the magic within the art of film and shines of creativity in this timeless film where every cinematic element is assigned with equal importance and intertwine in illuminating harmony."
