Synopsis:
"As the luxury liner Poseidon charts its course on New Year's Eve, disaster strikes when an undersea earthquake causes a titanic tidal wave and capsizes the vessel, leaving just 10 survivors. Led by a no-nonsense reverend (Gene Hackman), the group must maneuver through airshafts, electrical cables and a burning engine room to the boat's hull, which is their lone chance for escape. The film scored an Oscar for Best Song ("The Morning After"). "

"How to Escape a Luxurious, Capsized Ship"

"The Poseidon Adventure tells the original story of a group of people trying to escape a luxurious, capsized ship with their lives spared. Though made in 1972, this classic still comes with plenty of packed action that does not use pretension like movies of today. The actors play their parts well with the right amount of terror and suspense. They also have well-developed personalities that are distinguished from one another, especially during this disaster: a few take up leading roles, some are more calm than others, etc. The set is appealing and the directing is realistically shown through the shifty cameras, making the audience feel like they are really at sea.

The appearance may seem a bit low-quality and grainy to todays movie standards, though. Some say that this lack of special effects makes it a bit tedious and difficult to follow. But Poseidon does an exceptional job of focusing on the story, not just on explosives or breaking dishes, which requires people to get more involved. And its original, which cannot be said the same for Titanic. Plus, revolving a movie around a great plot is common in a typical 70s movie and in any top-rate movie, in my opinion.

Any remake of Poseidon has obviously failed miserably, but this movie will remain the first Poseidon Adventure film and the first major success of all the disaster films ever made afterwards."
