"Hard times through young eyes"

"The Journey of Natty Gann is the perfect Disney legendary tale and the perfect bedtime story for that little tomboy in your life. Set during the Great Depression in the 30’s, it presents these hard times through the eyes of a tough, independent, but slightly foolish child named Natty Gann as she embarks on a 2,000 mile adventure to meet up with her dad again.

From the minute I got an idea of the plot, I at least knew Natty Gann was going to be a decent film – she goes on a long adventure through American wilderness to find her dad, end of story. Not too many boring, confusing, or unnecessary details about the Great Depression or how tough life is in the city. I already know that. Instead, I get to focus on the family story and each character’s qualities of courage, love, and independence.

Natty Gann is still realistic, though: she’s an unglamorous tomboy who fights with boys, she curses sometimes, and her dad is single-parent who is forced to move thousands of miles away from her to find a job. However, what did not seem very realistic was that she immediately befriends a full-grown wolf and survives a day in the wilderness with very little survival skills and very little problems. But I do believe that there were rebellious girls who have done that at some point, so I still admire her bravery.

Basically, this is a lovely little film that children and adults who are young at heart can enjoy: not too long, not too pretentious, not too “Disney,” not too harsh (she’s just a child, for god’s sake!), not too annoying, the list of problems could go on and on. It’s just right! A honest and concise presentation that I found inspirational, adventurous, a bit romantic, and mainly solid. It didn’t hurt to save a little time to watch it. Besides, a lot of films could use a little influence from Natty Gann as far as how to write a really good movie."
