"better than the original because it shows more about michael's childhood"

"When one hears of a remake of a classic film, anyone who was a fan of the original will automatically be ready to compare it in every way to to original and go into detail about how much better the latter was. And of course when Rob Zombie decided to remake John Carpenter's classic 'Halloween', he was going to have to go all out to impress. And did he? Well in my honest opinion, as a massive fan of Carpenter's work, yes he did.

Zombie's take on 'Halloween' is a lot different than Carpenter's. The main thing being the fact that around the first half hour of the film focuses on Myer's childhood and just how he ended up as the deranged phycopath killer that he is. As we see how his family functions and the abuse he has to suffer from his older sister and crippled unstable step-father, as well as the torment that he his to suffer at school, we can see why Micheal ended up the way he did. For many, like me, this was a very enjoyable experience, a it was a very different take on Micheal's motives and his mind state for his destructive behaviour.

For others however, this my have ruined the whole concept of Micheal Myers and the horror of 'Halloween'. The reason being that when you look at it, a killer with no motives for his actions is a lot scarier than a killer with motives. When a killer has motives and reasons for his actions, there is a chance that we can reason with him, give him what he wants. In Carpenters original, the movie opens with The young Micheal Myers Slaughtering his sister with a blank expression on his face and doing it for no reason what so ever. When he returns 15 years latter, it is simply to revist his home, and when Jamie Lee Curtis comes into the picture and enters his property, he just simply wants to put an end to her, no questions asked. This is where the horror in Halloween lies, the blank expressionless mask of Myers, the creepy stares accompanied by the eerie Halloween theme, the fact that there is no reason why he wants to kill, he just simply has to.

In Zombie's movie, Micheal has a motive, to find his baby sister Laurie. This was not the plot of the original, and is a completely different take from Zombie,and does it work. In a sense yes it does,it adds more depth to the story, and more excitement and more tension. However this takes away the fear and horror of the film, which in my opinion is the reason why this film is not a horror film, but an all out slasher film.

As for the script of the film, I think it worked out rather well. As was mentioned beforehand, around the first half hour of the film is based on Myers childhood and his upbring in his broken abusive home. I think this is a feature that works very well as it is packed with thrills and tons of gore and suspense. As the film progresses it is much like the original in terms of the behaviour of the typical teen slasher flick actors and the killings of Micheal. Hovever with the slight over production of the film, it just seems like something is lost here.

All and all, I believe that this was a great take on Carpenters classic. By no mean am I saying that Zombie's film is in anyway better than the original, it doesn't have the fear and terror of the latter or it's ability to make the viewer unsettled in any way. But in it's own right it is a fantastic slasher movie and really takes the viewer on a fantastic thrill ride, an as far as remakes go, it was a great film."

It was a basic horror movie a good slasher mainly because it was a remake of halloween. I give it a 3 because it was plan."

Well, when i first heard there was gunna be a remake to such a classic film i was discusted! but then i heard that Rob Zombie was doing it so my expections came pretty high. even with Rob writting and directing the film, i still expected to see a mirror image of the film(like the sucky ass remake of the hitcher) but to my suprise, it was the exact opposite! almost the fisrt hour of the film is focused around his child hood and what drove young Michael to kill. with what this kid went through at school and home its no wonder he went crazy!!! what was also interesting about this version, is his relationship with baby Lori. Lori or "Boo" as he calls her, and his mother are the only two people he ever cared for. infact

SPOILER: when he goes to look for her in the second half of the film, its not kill her, but to be with his baby sister again...untill she stabs him and makes him mad.

but anyway, what i also liked about this version was that Michael was more "human" in the other halloween films hes some crazy guy with the devil inside him, it was ok for awhile, until part 6 when they said that when michael was born, the curse of samhain was laid on his family to save other familes, which i thoght was BS! Rob explained in like an hour what 7 movies never really bothered to explain!(i say 7 cuz part 3 isnt a "real" halloween film). Ofcorse nothing out does the original but this one does pretty well. As much as i want to, i cant say this film stands on its own, seeing as the killer and the story are so familier, and though he made many changes to the scenes we would find familer you couldnt help but rember the past...thoght his twist on the scenes were verry creppy... all in all Halloween is a great hooror film and without a doubt one of the better remakes ive seen of a horror film thus far...

"This prequel/remake is a three star film; average. The original simply can't be surpassed. Rob Zombie's graphic version of Halloween has some insight into how a young child becomes a destructive masked murderer. Although it attempts to explain the actions of Michael, it takes away from the original persona of Michael. Not knowing exactly why he did what he did was disturbing and intriguing in its own twisted way. It made Michael more of a mystery and left the audience wondering and open to use their own imagination. In this version, you know why Michael is on a rampage, what his mission is and what he is capable of. It soon becomes quite ridiculous and the film seems to run on forever. This movie is simply the original with more scens, a new cast, a higher body count and an abundance of gore. This film has some moments where an audience member might say to themselves, "Oh, I remember this part from the original." Those few moments are enjoyable for only a moment. Unfortunately, this film doesn't really stand on it's own; it merely uses the original as a subordinate and attempts to tac on some last minute fluff. I won't go so far as to say seeing it is a waste of money, but it can certainly wait until it's released on DVD. "
