Synopsis: "When cataclysmic typhoons, earthquakes and other disasters suddenly grip the earth, an aspiring writer (John Cusack), his estranged wife (Amanda Peet) and others discover that the secret may lie in ancient Mayan prophecies that describe global calamity in the year 2012. Roland Emmerich directs a star-studded ensemble cast that also includes Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Danny Glover." "sucks""This movie may scare your kids and jive them nightmares about this year. My kids were scared. I think that it sucks." by moviereviewer321 on Sun Jan 8th, 2012 0 Comments | Reply | Report"Consider Roland Emmerich as the king of disaster films.""John Cusack stars as a dad to the rescue as the Earth crumbles. It's predictable popcorn fare at its finest." by gordokc77 on Sun Jul 31st, 2011 0 Comments | Reply | Report"this disater movie is a disater""well most disater movies turn out to be a disater, i actualy liked the first hour of the film but when it further into the film it began to suck more, where did the writers go? did they just run out of time or just give up. if you're a fan of the american godzilla then buy this, if you're a fan of i dont know good films? then dont buy this." by lordypordy on Sun Sep 5th, 2010 0 Comments | Reply | Report"OH MY GOSH""This movie was absolutely crazy and I loved it. Throughout the whole movie I was sitting on the edge of my seat. I was constantly feeling chills go down my spine and it would make me wonder if something like that could actually happen. And if it could...wow I would be really afraid right now. so check this movie out guys its awesome." by reneebg1 on Wed Jun 2nd, 2010 0 Comments | Reply | Report"Nothing deep or thought provoking. Just alot of fun."""2012" isn't one of the more intelligent of even believable stories you'll come across but it is very entertaining and a visual sight to behold. Roland Emmerich seems to have an attraction for destroying the earth and millions of people in the process. He never has made it look better than it does in "2012". The huge, epic scale CGI devestation is simply amazing. There are no real stand-out performances in the film but none that really drag the movie down. Woody Harrelson is pretty annoying and Danny Glover is terribly miscast. But luckily neither have long sustained roles. In a nutshell, "2012" is exactly what it says it is. It's meant to be a big, loud, action-packed, fun time. It's entertaining and definately worth a look." by keith7198 on Wed Apr 14th, 2010 0 Comments | Reply | Report"Was better that the day after tomorrow""Good story line, kept me interested. Actors were good, some parts were just a little hard to swallow...lol. All in all it was good." by ali on Wed Apr 14th, 2010 0 Comments | Reply | Report"2012""In case you haven't heard, the world is going to end in 2012. Apparently the ancient Mayans predicted, centuries ago, something about a long Mayan calendar that measures 5,126 years and it resets in 2012. I saw on Fox News that there was a Belgian man whose already quit his job and just started taking really cool trips. He says, "The best thing you can do is stop working and go on vacation." Things will start getting very weird very soon. Scientists say that there will be an increase in solar activity causing the earth's magnetic poles to reverse in December, 2012. Then get ready for nice things like earthquakes, floods, and more than half the world eventually being frozen over except for much of Africa which should dodge the doom then, so look to Africa as a place for a new home. I'm not sure if this is true or not but I'm leaning towards it not being true. One thing is for certain though. "2012," the movie, is a visually incredible piece of pop culture entertainment. The film stars John Cusack who plays Jackson Curtis, a Los Angeles writer who works part time as a limo driver for a Russian billionaire. Curtis is divorced and rarely spends time with his kids. One day, of course in the year 2012, a disastrous event hits LA and Curtis’s family escapes the amazing madness by a few milliseconds, literally. The film follows the family through their treacherous experience as the audience finds out who will survive and who will not. Roland Emmerich has been called the master director of disaster movies and he said that this one would be his last. This is definitely a happy ending to his disaster movie-making career. When he said that this would be the best one he was right. It's a disaster film that has that silly but great atmosphere of the 70s, like "The Poseidon Adventure" did. The movie knows that it's dumb and it knows that it's ridiculous and that’s one of the reasons it's good. It doesn't take itself too seriously as it only tries to be an action packed blockbuster and that's what it comes out to be. There are many action scenes in the film but the best one by far is the first disaster scene in Los Angeles. Just when you think it can't get any better, it does with exploding trucks, a collapsing parking garage, and a giant, falling doughnut. We get hammered with action all at once and it's great. The special effects are the best I've seen within the last few years and it would be a crime if they don't get an Oscar nomination, at least. The movie is two and a half hours and about 20 minutes could've been cut out. But the things that really irritated me about the film were the stupid queue lines. I'm talking about parts in the script when people say, "I feel like there's something pulling us apart," while talking about their relationship and then suddenly, an earthquake happens and they literally get pulled apart. Then, while in an interview, the governor of California says, "The worst is over," and as soon as he says that, the worst starts. So yes, the dialogue is poorly written. Also, a few performances are badly executed but John Cusack is good. I actually liked the plot of the third act a lot. I don't want to give anything away but the later part of the film is much smarter than the beginning and middle. Don't wait for the DVD to watch this movie. It's meant to be seen on a big screen in a movie theater and it will stay that way. Definitely pay your money to see this film because it's one of the better action movies out this year." by willyt on Fri Dec 11th, 2009 0 Comments | Reply | Report"I feel ashamed to have paid to see this film""After watching this film I was disgusted that by paying the price of admission I had contributed to the success of this film. This film is BAD, and not in the fun kitchy `B' movie way which can be entertaining. The beginning of the film is somewhat tolerable as they set up the how and why of the coming catastropy, and then follows two hours of sheer torture as the writers seemed to try and string together as many cinematic cliches as possible. In my opinion this film was doomed before any actor stepped in front of a green screen, or any computer animator meshed a crack in the earth. The writing is so bad that I am shocked and appalled it wasn't shredded on first reading. Now, I can understand the project getting away from the director, and a terrible film being made. But I can't for the life of me understand how the studio watched the completed product and still decided to distribute it to theaters worldwide. Hopefully my words of warning will convince at least two people who would otherwise have paid to go see this film to skip it. And then my conscience will be clear that I haven't contributed to the decline of cinema." by magesing on Thu Dec 10th, 2009 0 Comments | Reply | Report"Wait for the DVD""I haven't walked out on many movies, but this one was wasting my time and my bottom hurt about a half-four before the scheduled ending. I was looking forward to the all-star cast which did give a great performance but this blockbuster promised special effects that in reality were old and tired. If you like the made for tv specials like the Towering Inferno, then you might enjoy this film. When the screen transformed into an image of ash falling from the sky in a recreation of 9-11, I had enough and walked out. Save your money and your seat and watch this at home where you are not subject to the 25 minutes of previews included in the extra long run-time." by mariagreen on Sun Dec 6th, 2009 0 Comments | Reply | Report"Great""2012 is an edge-of-your-seat, action packed film that will have viewers guessing until the end. It starts off like any other diasaster movie. Scientists discovering a cause of soon to come natural diasasters, blah blah blah weve heard it all before. The suspense is massive with our main characters are just avoiding death from these catastrophes including earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and tsunamis. The visual picture is clearly computer animated which counts as a fault. But the acting of the characters is excellent. The movie finishes with an average ending of our heros on the verge of dying on a ship due to massive tsunami waves. About 4000 people lived in the end which was a dissapointment. But overall, I'd rate 2012 a 3.5 out of 5. By the way, dosent it just kill you that im only 12? ;D" by coynekid17 on Sat Nov 28th, 2009 0 Comments | Reply | Report"End of the World Awesome""At The Movies 2012 (PG) * * * * * Melt Down! By ROBERT WALDMAN Disaster movies have been around for a long time. State of the art special effects partly driven by new computer models sure can solidify that fear element. Master filmmaker Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) returns to familiar territory in the visually stunning 2012, a big effects driven blockbuster from Columbia Pictures now staking out an impressive presence at Oakridge Cinemas, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City cites around B.C. Edge of your seat thrills will grip audiences for over two and a half hours here. Global in scope Emmerich takes us on an unbelievable journey as catastrophic events begin to take their toll on poor old Earth. Scientists around the world do their best to uncover the mystery but by then it may be too late. Spectacular Special Effects blow you away While the best brains in the field seem to have been taken aback by the rapidity of this doomsday scenario we are introduced to happy go lucky Jackson Curtis. All Jackson wants is to bond with his kids but somehow he gets wound up in the story as California quickly fades to a mere memory. Landmarks around the world begin to disappear as a pending doom sets in. Out to try to find a solution to this unknown mystery is Dr. Adrian Helmsley. Expect to see lots of second guessing and stonewalling as the good doctor, a physicist by training, tries to tell his superiors whats coming to destroy them. Efforts to find a solution seem pointless as the bureaucracy goes about its merry way and egos begin to collide. Smart from start to finish, 2012 is an outstanding technical achievement. Atmosphere is everything to these disaster type movies and Emmerich smartly uses famous locations to unleash those naturally occurring freaks of nature. Smart science is well brought up as are the great characters that populate this story. Unlikely Hero John Cusack rises to the occasion Likeable John Cusack (Runaway Jury) does a grand job as a down on his luck ex-husband who must come to terms with his family, new lovers and, oh, yes, the odd street cracking right before his eyes and feet and ears. No country is spared here as heroes and villains appear at a moment's notice and bear heavily on the upheaval that gets worse by the second. Busy as ever Woody Harrelson (Zombieland) pulls off another wild and crazy character while Amanda Peet (The Whole Nine Yards) does nicely as a mom in turmoil. Even though Cusack gets top billing the real star of this movie, apart from those uncanny special effects and the breakneck speed the world is collapsing, right before our very eyes, is Chiwetel Ejifor (Talk To Me) who continues to grow with each and every role he takes on, whether it's a scientist here or a crossdresser from England. 2012 features a big cast with nice deliveries also from Oliver Platt (Frost/Nixon) and Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible 2). About the only misfire here is having Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon 2) pretend to be a president. Barrack Obama Mr. Glover isnn't. Huge sets that are impressive, tension that never abates and a fight for survival make 2012 a terrific joy ride. Bottom line here is to enjoy life while you can.
