"If I’m honest I wasn’t really expecting much from this. Most people that know me are already aware that I think of Robert Downey Jr as the most talented actor working today, in any genre, and have done so from before his enforced removal from the profession due to his custodial sentence. I have yet to honestly see him make a hash of anything he has done. Granted, sometimes the material has been a little skittish, but his effort and enthusiasm for his parts in any production that he undertakes repeatedly underlines not only an admirable work ethic, but is backed up by a screen presence that is increasingly rare these days.

So when I heard that he would be taking on the role of England’s smartest private dick, I knew the film would be entertaining. When I heard Guy Ritchie was going to be directing it, I was a little less enamoured by the prospect, wondering just what Ritchie would make of the time period, being more used to directing gritty, modern British drama. Completing this formidable trio was Dr Watson, played by Jude Law, another highly talented actor whose performances and project choices have been sometimes perplexing, but always intriguing.

So if we were ticking boxes on the three main players involved, it would have been a grateful nod for Robert Downey Jnr and a couple of ‘I’m not so sure’ for Law and Ritchie. I couldn’t really see how Jude Law could pass off a portly Victorian doctor, or how Ritchie could envelop anybody into the murky backstreets of old London town with any realism or feel for the period.

It was at this point that I began to understand Ritchie’s approach to Holmes and his cohorts. This was the Holmes and Watson that had been unfettered by thirty years of British television and like many others, my almost dyed in the wool vision of the couple originated largely from that view.

But instead of a pair of starch collared professionals, Ritchie takes us on a whole different kind of trip. Portraying Holmes as brilliant, sparkling mind, but lacking in many of the social graces that most of us take for granted.

Confident in his own abiities and often driven to distraction by them, he fails in so many other areas as to be almost pitiful. Downey Jr plays with Holmes’ character delightfully, in a fashion not too far removed from Depp’s Jack Sparrow, so it would be difficult to imagine this Holmes as playable by anybody else apart from him.

Watson too has had a makeover from the overweight, haughty and flappable surgeon we have come to expect. Jude Law brilliantly turns him into a capable and formidable opponent both physically and mentally, with a sharp mind and even sharper wit. Both characters are eminently watchable throughout and seeing them in physical action is often as real a treat as when they are using their brains to solve a less physcially demanding problem.

Rachel McAdams and Mark Strong make up the rest of the main cast and are both equally compelling as Irene Adler (alluring, wanton troublemaker) and Lord Blackwood (brooding, evil incarnate) respectively, complimenting Both Downey Jnr and Law with some fine performances of their own.

The cinemtography was surprisingly accomplished for the period and the Direction from Ritchie was mostly on the money though appeared to be a little haphazard at times, with a rather overlong second act, seemingly (thought not altogether surprisingly) more comfortable with prolongued periods of action rather than anything approaching pedestrianism or moments of contemplation.

Altogether, however, despite these small and mostly irrelevant annoyances, Ritchie has done a great job a breathing new life into an old standard and no doubt providing Downey Jnr with another franchise to turn up and do the business for every couple of years."

"Guy Ritchie isn't your typical director. He's very gritty. Known for his style, he has made films that are similar to Quentin Tarantino's work. His movies are original which is another word for different and wacky. But does "Sherlock Holmes" live up to Ritchie's other movies? Nope. Fortunately, the two main actors add charm and wit to their characters making this a fun ride.

The villain here is Lord Blackwood. After finally catching the serial killer, Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson think they've closed yet another successful case. But when Blackwood arises from the dead and starts his killing spree again, Holmes must continue his search.

The atmosphere of the movie is awesome. I've always been a fan of movies set in London during the Victorian Era. There's something very intriguing about the style, the amenities, and the clothes worn back then. Ritchie's style of camera work and England's 18th century style combined make for some very cool set decorations. But Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are really the ones that flow the movie. First of all, they've got the accents down pat. Secondly, when they're together they make the audience want to hear what they have to say. The two make us want to follow them on their journey as if it's real instead of just sitting and watching a movie on a screen. Law is smoothly calm and relaxed in his role and it's understandable that Downey was nominated for a Golden Globe because of his role due to his comedic timing and facial expressions.

The story here is stretched out way too far though. The first 20 minutes is so slow and I thought this was going to be one of the worst movies of 2009. The movie is too long and it spends way too much time on finding out the little details within the plot. I know this is a mystery and Sherlock is a detective and I agree that for a mystery to work we need to know small plot points. But a lot of the details are farfetched and unrealistic which weighs down the movie's authenticity. Also, Rachel McAdams is only in the movie for eye candy. Her performance feels tacky and immature.

But once again, Guy Ritchie's great style of editing shows here and it works. The music in the movie is one of the best scores this year as Composer Hans Zimmer uses a banjo, cimbalom, squeaky violins, and a broken pub banjo to bring out his notes. Downey and Law help bring out the feeling of the film and I think it's safe to say that Robert Downey Jr. has made the biggest career comeback in actor history. He’s come a long way from "Weird Science" to "Tropic Thunder" and I'm looking forward to "Iron Man 2" this summer."

"The whole idea of Holmes as a drunken, narcissistic genius is entirely new and one that can be so absolutely entertaining. And truly, it was. Downey was wonderful with the part he was given and was a pleasure to watch.

The problem, however, lies with the rest of the movie. His love interest is neither sexy nor mysterious, and the audience is expected to care about her because....I'm unsure of the reason. Not to mention the flimsy plot and lack of general character development.

Honestly, though, if you're looking for a movie that you can turn your brain off throughout and still be marginally entertained while watching Robert Downey, Jr. fight people and ridiculously shot camera angles, this is perfect. One might make the argument that it's a smart movie with witty jokes that go over the average idiot moviegoer's head, so therefore it's a brilliant, witty film. Sure, but don't market it then as an action/slapstick comedy and forget to entertain that audience the whole movie."

A must if you have a decent IQ, a love of witty dialog with an bit of sarcasm. Some fans found the quick witted phrases fly over their heads and I found myself laughing at the film and again as I felt for those fans. Perhaps they need to see it again and should.

This fan loved it and definitely will enjoy seeing it again."

Advance notice on Sherlock Holmes looks like a lock for Warner Brothers to finish the year off with a bang. Just like the summer the studio unleashed the mega successful The Hangover with little star power or buzz word of mouth is sky high for Guy Ritchie’s latest journey. Check out all the fun at the Empire Oakridge Cinemas, Empire Esplanade 6, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City cites around B.C.

Back with a vengeance is Robert Downey, Jr. who dazzles as Sherlock Holmes. Unlike the classic more serious Basil Rathbone classics for Universal Studios from the 1940s this new look at an old hero is high camp in the extreme. After a lackluster somber effort in The Soloist Downey is in firm command as the hip and slick sleuth from the Isles who locks horns with an evil madman out to, you guessed it right, take over the world.

Deduction is Sherlock Holmes forte and he has ample time to piece together scores of clues as London is under more than a fog. Apparently a British nobleman who goes by the name of Lord Blackwood has created quite a stir. Cold and calculating is the sincere portrayal by Mark Strong (Body of Lies) whose use of the art of black magic strikes fear into all he encounters. Bent of power the only thing apparently standing in Blackwood’s way is a determined private eye who doesn’t exactly get along with everyone.

Odd man out in this piece is Dr. Watson. Jude Law (Alfie) nicely pulls off the role made famous by Nigel Bruce in the Rathbone series and is a perfect foil for Downey here. Together these two are wonderful as Ritchie directs a free wheeling free for all in this 128 minute outing that truly excels in production values.

Danger is everywhere in this movie but you need to pay attention as scores of “small” details all link up thanks to that brilliant mind of Britain (dare I say the world’s) top sleuth. Make no mistake about it, little humour is utilized here. But the tone is definitely more free-spirited and engaging than the no-nonsense original series that expanded the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle hero further afield. Downey will do likewise for a whole series of new fans that will get a kick out of his quick reasoning.

Fast and furious is the pacing but even more rapid are some of Holme’s musings. Often those words will fly by and go over the heads of many in theatres which is a minor quibble with the presentation. Stylistically you get a great look of old London here complete with horse and carriage through fares. Close calls and heroics are well choreographed and the tension and suspense really never lets up.

A very smart story featuring science, crime, the occult and a mystery villain all come into play in this flambouyant film whose bouncy music will also reel you in. Look for a sure fire second outing for this new Law/Downey team and a franchise in the making, much like the latter’s success with Marvel’s Iron Man.

Canadian talent also gets some notice here with rising star Rachel McAdam (Red Eye) quite appealing as a British lass caught in this intricate web of intrigue spun by your typical megalomaniac.

Fun from start to finish Sherlock Holmes is a rock em sock em affair that pulls no punches and offers an engaging time out of those winter doldrums.
