Synopsis: "Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this riveting biopic as J. Edgar Hoover, the longtime FBI director as notorious for his overzealous methods of law enforcement as for the rumors regarding his cross-dressing and close relationship with protg Clyde Tolson." "Ok for History Nuts""I liked the movie, only because I love history and non fiction. Their is no real thrilling sections to the movie and its more like a documentary. I almost laughed when I saw Clyde's make-up when attempting to make him look aged...looked like a halloween character. Whoever did that makeup needs to be fired. This movie is not for everyone." by johnjohn on Sun Dec 4th, 2011 0 Comments | Reply | Report"BORING!!!""This movie was SO VERY BORING!!! I almost got up and left, but decided to stay "just a little longer". I should have left when I was going to in the first place. Leo DiCaprio does not act gay very well. The make up for the "old men" was horrible. I thought maybe they let a child with a blindfold do it. Don't see it!!! You will waste money and time. The only reason to see this movie is if you haven't slept in a week and you need a nap. Seriously!!!" by glbybyby on Mon Nov 21st, 2011 0 Comments | Reply | Report"This movie made history seem like a really interesting comic""This movie made history seem like a really interesting comic book/romance novel. A bit different from the conventional history or romance movie but it mixes all three genres so well. I laughed, I cried, and then I learned a few things about the US, my self and J.Edgar, and then I laughed and cried again. My husband loved it, too. This movie is good for men and women to enjoy." by tanrod123 on Mon Nov 21st, 2011 0 Comments | Reply | Report"Most likely factual, more than likely puffed up implied actuals""SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED BY THE FILM!!! ************************************************************* The story is in "flash-back" format starting out with a old man J. Edgar Hoover, now the head of the FBI. it cuts back and forth between his early child hood and during his career with the then non-existent FBI and the way he and the team he assembled to make the first FBI. The story line seems stable and mostly true to history, however there is a sub-plot with his gay relationship with his #2 man. It isn't until later that the audience finds out about their love for each other. This I find disgusting and unfortunately the writer, director allude in the film that this is just a normal part of human life. NOTHING could be further from the truth. Gay ISN'T normal! (IMHO) The other part of the movie is about his mothers great influence on his life. He was basically a "mommas-boy" that hid his insecurities from others. It isn't until we see him and his lover #2 gay partner telling each other how much they love each other (blech!) that we see J.Edgar's vulnerabilities. The make-up could have been better, and in one scene where his lover is very old (after having a stroke) the guys makup is so obvious, you can see the skull cap for his hair piece. I would normally give this film a three, but because of the emphasis on gay being normal AND the make-up thing, I gave it a two. I would advise passing on this film. Don't waste the $$, "in time" seems like a better film." by jpnoll on Mon Nov 14th, 2011 0 Comments | Reply | Report |
