World War II soldier-turned-U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels investigates the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane, but his efforts are compromised by his own troubling visions and by Dr. Cawley.
"Shutter Island" is a moody, eerie masterpiece from director Martin Scorsese. Many have been disappointed because Scorsese stepped out of his normal box but the film shows his range more than his dedication to a formula.
DiCaprio's performance is Oscar nomination worthy and could be his best work to date. The film is also helped by flawless supporting work from Ruffalo, Kingsley, von Sydow, and more.
Scorsese's island is a character itself with a mysterious atomsphere and a genuine creepiness that is felt as you venture from site to site. The constant rain, rust, and overgrowth add so much to the feeling Scorsese is trying to create.
The story is rock solid yet many are griping because they were looking at and expecting the wrong things. The intensity of DiCaprio's character and the mystery of Shutter Island is the focus of the film and Scorsese tells his story in a deliberate and crafty fashion.
Strong performances and strong direction make this possibly the best film of this young movie season.
Martin Scorsese has directed some of the greatest films of all time including "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas," and "The Aviator." He deservedly won the Academy Award for "The Departed" which is one of my favorite movies. Here, he teams up with Leonardo DiCaprio for the fourth time which makes for the best film of the year so far. "Shutter Island" is a dark, terrifying ride that will keep your eyes on the screen the entire two and half hours. It has a deep and smart story that some may consider too confusing and it is but I think that's all part of the fun. DiCaprio gives the most riveting performance of his career as Marshal Teddy Daniels. The story here turns into a real psychological thriller within the second half. There's a huge twist at the end which I'm not a fan of. Getting there was fun and it was interesting going through the steps along the way to figure out this crime/mystery, but the final turnout of the story made me roll my eyes. Maybe it's just me but the result of all that we'd gone through was a little disappointing. It seems like the movie almost ended too quickly. I won’t spoil it though. Despite the ending, the film is a must-see. The look, texture, and set-design of the film are incredible along with a creepy musical score that sets the tone for the whole movie. If you haven't yet, you should take the time to go out to the movie theatre and see "Shutter Island.”
Maybe it was all the hype about there being such a twist that I guessed the ending before I bought my ticket. Maybe this was why I wasn't confused because of my preconcieved notion of the ending. There were plots that were just plain silly. I really wanted to like this film because of Leo and Scorcese. Just wait for it on the Red Box or cable so you don't feel ripped off.
Leonarado DiCaprio has never disappointed me in any of his movies and his title lives on through this!! This movie was awesome, a great plot with a major twist!! I would recommend it as a MUST SEE!! It was absoulutely awesome. No disrespect to anyone, but I dont think you should say the movie was no good just because you didnt get it, just because you were confused doesn't mean the movies was bad.
Very very long, tiresome. Story - if you can call it that - drags on. A wasted two and a half hours... The first half of the film could be halved in time: too many unnecessary scenes, I got the impression Scorsese did not know where he was going with the story so changed the whole plot. Don't waste your money on this film, it's really not worth it
sooo the plot was not only confusing but always had you guessing, which actually kept me interested for the first half of the movie. Then does a really big twist when dicaprio loses his partner. And the ending was the biggest dissapointment of all, if your one who likes to watch movies that keep you guessing the whole way thru, then be left with a retarded ending, the story at the end was just unbelievable...but hey i wont ruin it for you guys, im just gonna tell you that i wouldnt go see this movie again if someone bought my ticket!!!!
If you're good at figuring out movie ending and find most movies.....(for lack of a better word) boring and predictable, then this is the movie for you. Smart, thrilling, exciting, emotional, and simply brilliant! You can call it a modern day, more touching, Sixth Sense.
I just watched the movie yesterday...and I would not mind going again with a friend today!
plot was very confusing, many scenes were left hanging with no meaning. no continuity to the plot. Main characters are poorly developed, with audience never connecting with the characters. Complete waste of Leonarado DiCaprio's talents on this movie.Ending left the audience hanging with no understanding of what was real and what was imaginary.2/23/10
