The Punisher -Spoiler Alert
The Punisher (2004) is an action/crime film directed by Jonathan Hensleigh. It stars Thomas Jane as Frank Castle (The Punisher) and John Travolta as Howard Saint, a family man on the wrong side of the law. Although the setting is never revealed, most of the movie takes place in Tampa, Florida.
The plot of this film is simple; the protagonist, Frank Castle, is a FBI agent on his last job before he retires. During this job, he gets one of Saint’s sons killed, forcing Saint to retaliate by killing all of Frank’s family. Once he realizes that his wife and young son are dead, he uses all the skills at his disposal to find, humiliate, and kill Saint and everyone who gets in his way.
There are many highs and lows in this particular film. The acting, for one, was pretty good. Thomas Jane plays a good “avenger”; he shows the dark side of crime fighting perfectly. John Travolta also acts fantastically as the villain who will do anything to avenge his son’s death. Aside from the two main characters, the best acting was probably from Dave, the neighbor of Frank, who has piercings all over his face and is played by Ben Foster.
If I had to think of one low point in this film, it would have to be the soundtrack. It just didn’t seem to fit with most of the movie. The action scenes were still some of the best I’ve seen, but some of them lost their value due to the music.
All in all, I liked “The Punisher” a lot. I’d give it a B+. It was great fun and a total action film. If you like lots of action and dark content, I recommend this movie.
