"THIS IS DEFINETLY THE BEST MOVIE EVER!" Even though it was spanish, I followed it really well. It was imagitive, beauitful, and wonderful. Athought very gory and violent it still a prefect movie. I do not recommend it for kids. This movie is completely the oppisite of Borat. Number one movie of 2006 for sure! Great writing, excellent preformances, and an excellent cinematic experience. It begins during the war, as a group of soilders meet up at an old water mill, to set up command points, to destroy a band of rebels. Ofiela, a young girls, is in love with fairy tales. She follows a fairy into a Labyrinth, to meet a Faun, in which she befriends. He tells her she is Princess Moanna, and must complete three tasks to prove she is not lost to the humans. The first task, she must kill a giant toad living under an oak tree, to recieve a key. (this scene was very disturbing) then, the second, she uses the key to go to a dinning room, and take out a dagger, but eats the food on the table, even though told not to, and awaikins a weird creature, that has eyes in it's hand, and it chases after her, theatrening in death. The faun leaves as she did not follow the rules, and she is left alone. Her mother dies, during pregancy, and her father very abusive only cares about the baby (his son). Finaly the Faun revisits her, and tells her she may join him, at his royal palace, only if she follows his rules.
The movie disveres oscars, and was really excellent. The imagination behind this movie, was awesome, and definetly should create more movies. The special effects in this movie, was purely amazing. The spanish title of the movie is "El Laberinto del Fauno" a.k.a Pan's Labyrinth.

Wow i've never heard of this one either. Can you compare it to anything. Also, who is in it?

It's a foreign movie, I haven't seen many of them. I only remember Doug Jones from the end credits, there was also a Ivana something.

But for the unnecessary graphic violence, this movie would have been way better than your average canned feature from hollywood.

Overall, it appears the formula for this flick was as follows: Take some "Chronicles of Narnia" fantasy, add in tad of dellusion a la "A Beautiful Mind", and mix in a touch of superfluous gore (pick any recent war movie).

Seems like a decent renter if you can handle the graphic violence. 3 stars.

This movie, like CATM said before is absolutely amazing. It revises the awe that comes along fairy tales and is beautifuly done. The gore is actually a good quality in the movie, keeping it well balanced. The acting is great, and if you want to see something different but worth your dollar, check out this movie.

Maybe not the best movie I've ever seen, but your exactly right, it was such a good movie. Alot of people don't like the fact that it's in english subtitles. I think either thoes people are lazy, because they don't want to read the movie, or they don't have any appreciation for forigen films. Besides, throughout the duration of the film, you forget your reading it, because your so lost in the great story unfolding before you.

Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Dr. Zhivago. All are considered masterpieces in my book. Pan's Labyrinth joins this echelon. It is a tour de force! Congratulations to director Guillermo Del Toro for bringing his vision to life. The backdrop being the Spanish Civil War, we're introduced to a mother and daughter on their way to meet The Captain of a fascist military unit charged with flushing out loyalists in the hills surrounding their camp. Afraid of meeting her new stepfather, the Captain, the young girl Ofelia is lost in a fantasy world which seemingly protects her from the violence and misery all around her. Almost immediately, we're introduced to the characters that abound in her imagination, including a Faun (Pan), fairies who can morph from insect to miniature humanoids with wings and some very nasty looking creatures. The special effects were well done; impressive CG, but done masterfully and within limits. While it is true that the audience is subjected to many horrific scenes of violence, they actually enhance the film by juxtaposing her fantasy with in-your-face brutality of the world Ofelia lives in. The yin and yang of both flavors combine well and keep you wanting for more. It's times like these that I wish I spoke fluent Spanish and did not have to contend with subtitles. But even speed reading through the words cannot detract from this visceral experience called Pan's Labyrinth.
