Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

“When you need me but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go.” Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) follows this theory when staying at Isabel Green’s (Maggie Gyllenhaal) house, which is at the middle of a farm in England’s countryside. The movie Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, written by Emma Thompson in 2010, is a story about Nanny McPhee, a mysterious government nanny, and Mrs. Green’s family. Mrs. Green has to take care of her three children plus her nephew and her niece, who evacuated from London to stay away from bombings. All five of them are awfully naughty and fight all the time, when it is hard for Mrs. Green to stay at home and take care of them. Since her husband is missing at war, it is also very frustrating for her to be responsible for the family and the farm, alone, while never having her own, peaceful time. In this tough situation, Nanny McPhee comes to help Mrs.Green and becomes her hero. This movie is an old-fashioned fantasy movie with the background of World War II. It is a movie worth watching, being a good exemplary for kids by teaching five lessons during some exciting adventures and as well, emphasizing the importance of a family.

As Nanny McPhee stays at Mrs. Green’s house, the five children learn lessons and become mature, at the same time, inspiring little kids to imitate their ways. When the children learn five lessons: to stop fighting, to share, to help, to be brave, and to have faith, the ugly parts on Nanny McPhee’s face disappear one by one, as she smiles decently. An example of this is, when the children learn ‘to share’ as they share beds with each other, a wart from Nanny McPhee’s face disappears. Shaheema Barodien states at channel24.co.za, “The children will need to learn five very important lessons and each lesson learned magically improves Nanny McPhee’s ghastly physical appearance.” (2010) Nanny McPhee’s nice smile really is a big motivation towards better behavior of young audiences because she rarely smiles; she smiles only when the children act and behave well, and develop in personality. Small kids would try to follow the moral examples in the movie to look good to their parents, expecting a proud smile like Nanny McPhee. They will realize that these behaviors would bring delighted reactions to the elders, like how Nanny McPhee’s appearance reacted to the children’s acts.

In addition to the five lessons, this movie reveals the importance of a family community. From a fighting relationship, the five children later become aware of each other’s importance and the greatness and satisfaction through excellent cooperation, when they captured five piglets that escaped from the farm. Not only the movie contains comedy and laughter by stupid and childish humors, such as Cyril expressing the farm a British museum of poo, but also there are some heartwarming scenes dealing with families that form delighted smiles on our face, and some silence followed by tears in our eyes. Norman (Asa Butterfield), Mrs. Green’s first child, and Cyril (Eric Vlahos), Mrs. Green’s nephew, find out a similarity between the two, the absence of fathers. Even though Cyril has a father, he is at a very high position in the army and is unfriendly and cold to his son. On the other hand, Norman’s friendly, loving father is missing at war, and now Norman is the oldest male in the family. With Nanny McPhee, Cyril and Norman experience great venture when they go to London to find out if Mr. Green was really dead, when they received a telegraph that he was dead from war. At toptenreviews.com, David Gritten states: “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang is not all comedy; there’s a melancholy underlying theme about absent fathers … this is a shrewd, heartfelt piece of work.” (2010)

This fantasy drama uses adventures to teach lessons to children and inspires them to be good, while revealing the importance of a family at the same time. Although it is mostly comedy, some heartwarming scenes are also included. As you watch the movie, you will find your face full of laughter and giggling, but soon glittering in your eyes. However, at the end of the movie, there will definitely be a huge heartwarming and pleased smile on your face. Moreover, you will not want to miss the ending credits; that is also quite hilarious, creative, and is a lot of fun. Quick, go download the movie Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang and fully enjoy it with your family!
