This movie looked as if it would be pretty good. Sure, the setup was pretty standard (wholesome small town, decent sheriff), but the acting was good, the cliches were minimal, and the action started up fast with a nice creepy moment (that was shown entire in the preview--too bad).
But there was a serious inconsistency in the way the sickness taking over the town progresses. The 1st victims become semi-catatonic, then progress to a sort of intelligent rage zombie (homicidal and mindless, but cunning). Yet at other points we see "crazies" working together, having calm conversations (about plans to eat people...but they're just too rational). One character, realizing after several moments of irrational violence that he's "not right," gets to stay rational long enough to heroically sacrifice himself for the people he almost killed.
But the end of this film was so stupid that I absolutely have to break my no spoilers rule. SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILER ALERT!
Let me spell it out. It's a nuke. And the characters were less than a mile away. And one(at least) was looking directly at the explosion when it went off. And their car was picked up and thrown by the shock wave. And then they got out of the car, not only NOT BLINDED by the nuclear flash they looked at but NOT BURNED EITHER (also apparently not injured by the car flying through the air and rolling). And walked THROUGH THE FALLOUT to the next city, completely fine.
