Bolt brings a fresh twist to the classic “Lassie” story of loyalty and devotion from a canine to his human. The movie incorporates family values, fun and laughter into a story that will appeal to both the young and the young at heart. As a college student I was not sure what to expect from this family movie but I definitely got my money’s worth. Throughout most of the movie I was smiling and laughing and my heart was truly warmed by the loveable characters and the engaging story.
Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) is a dog has been raised on a movie set and stars in his own television show named after himself. Only he doesn’t know its television. Everything in Bolt’s world is set up to make him believe that he has been genetically altered with super powers like lightning speed, laser eyes and a “super bark”. In the show Bolt must save his human girl Penny (Miley Cyrus) from the clutches of the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell). The producers want to keep Bolt believing in his role so that he will play a convincing role.
In an unusual set of events bolt escapes the set and ends up in New York far away from Hollywood while still believing that Penny is in danger. Determined to save her he must now cope in a world that he has never known, a world where food is not just readily available and a superbark won’t knock over buildings. Along the way he encounters Mittens (Susie Essman), a cynical street cat who reluctantly gets caught up in the adventure and Rhino (Mark Walton), a chubby hamster who believes in Bolt’s super powers and is his biggest fan. As this unique trio travels across the country to save Penny, Bolt must come to grips with the fact that his whole life has been a lie and he must discover his true self.
The animation in this film is enough to create very believable characters and expressions that make you fall in love with them. Every wiggling whisker, wagging tail, sniffing nose and panting tongue are created with the great detail and believability that we have come to expect and enjoy from Disney. The actors voiced their characters well and I especially enjoyed hearing Miley Cyrus as Penny. Another feature to be sure and check out is the 3D version (which I was unable to see but have heard is wonderful). This is a movie that will appeal to nearly all audiences and would be great to take your kids (or yourself) out to see this holiday season.
