I technically want to give it three and a half stars because it was entertaining enough to deserve so. Most people didn't like it and I can see why but if you go in thinking that its going to be different than the other mummy films because its about a Chinese emperor than you are mistaken. The film is absurd and preposterous and is proud of it. The movie wasn't meant to take on a world of realistic possibilities it was meant to bring you into a fiction world where there are a ton of action and lots of the undead walking around. If you went in with that in mind then you can enjoy the film a lot better.
The film stars an almost entirely new cast except for Brendan Fraser returning as Rick O'Connell and John Hannah as Evelyn O'Connell's brother Jonathan. The new cast consists of Maria Bello as Evelyn O'Connell (replacing Rachel Weisz), Luke Ford as their son Alex, Jet Li as the Chinese emperor, Russell Wong as General Ming and Michelle Yeoh as Zi Yuan. At first I was upset that they had changed a major character but in the end it worked out. I got used to her and it didn't stop me from enjoying the film.
Now I would tell you what the story is about but as you can guess its about the same thing as the first two but a different mummy. I am not going to fight with anyone and say that the story is strong or the acting is superb but what I will say to all is that this is just a fun hour and forty five minute film. That is what it was meant to be nothing more. I found myself enjoying the action and the adventure sequences a lot. The story was somewhat entertaining in how they got to what was going on. Overall a rousing adventure. I am a fan of action/adventures and I am a fan of the whole series of the Mummy films. If you are looking for the award winning actioner than pick up No Country For Old Men because than that is more for your satisfaction. This film is fo people just trying to have a good time. I recommend it for those that have liked the other films because it keeps the same style of how events get into motion along with humor. Even though it was directed by a different director (Rob Cohen instead of Stephen Sommers) it still kept the same essence. Stephen Sommers produces the movie in case people were wondering. Good adventure film.
Before I started watching this movie people were telling me that this is a boring film and that it is not that good. I beg to differ. It is a well made film by long time director Brian DePalma. The film is filled with pretty good performances by a good cast. The Black Dahlia stars Josh Hartnett as detective Bucky Bleichert and Aaron Eckhart as detective Lee Blanchard. Also as the love interest of Lee Blanchard is Scarlet Johansson and in Bucky Bleichert's life is Hilary Swank.
The story takes place during the late 30's to the late 40's during which a gruesome murder of a young girl called the Black Dahlia occurs. Detective Bleichert and Blanchard take the case even though that they usually don't take murder cases and they have to solve the now most notorious unsolved murder in California history. The screenplay for the film is well written using James Ellroy's novel of the same title. The story moves along in a fast pace and it can be a little hard to keep up at first until you get used to it. It is a well plotted mystery with great twist and turns that keep you guessing til the end. All the characters play important roles due to some kind of involvement in this case.
I can understand why people would find it boring because if you can not get used to the pace of the story telling than you will sit there bored to death. It moves a little fast for itself sometimes but overall a great entertainment. I enjoyed the mystery and truly did not know what was going on until the ending credits began rolling. A great mystery definitely worth watching
While watching this movie I noticed that it was able to accomplish something some movies couldn't in the short period of time given in the story itself. It allows you to become acquainted with the family the story focuses on quickly but effectively so that when something happens you care about them. The movie stars Kevin Bacon as Nick Hume a father to two boys and husband to the beautiful Kelly Preston. It also stars Garret Hedlund as Billy D. the leader to a gang that is after Nick. Now Aisha Tyler stars in this film as Lt. Wallace and John Goodman is a gun dealer and gives orders to Billy and his thugs.
The film is about Nick Hume's "perfect life" which includes a great job and a loving family, but then in an instant this "perfect life" is taking away from him when his oldest son is killed during a gang initiation. This takes him and throws his life completely out of whack. When he is about to testify against the one who killed his son the lawyer says that they want to scare the defense into a deal that would only get the guy 3 to 5 years in prison. He is not happy with it and decides to not testify and take care of it himself by killing the one that killed his son. By doing this it starts a war with Billy and his gang.
Now that seems like a simple plot and to be truthful it is but the way the story builds the character development so quick and how it pushes the story along it really works. The oldest son is killed not even a half an hour into the film and yet you fell like you had more screen time to get to know him and care that if he gets killed. Kevin Bacon is great in this role and the movie is intense. Some of the action scenes are a little brutal but very effective. The action is almost at the same level of brutal as Running Scared(2006). Its an intense film and I had a great time watching it.
This movie was exactly the way I thought it was going to be and that is why I didn't watch it when it was in theaters. I just happened to watch it today because my family was watching it and I had nothing to do. I wish I did have something to do. The film seemed as if it was written by someone who has A.D.H.D. because the film trails off the central story into complete randomness. The basis of this film could have made a great movie but instead they wanted to make an action film filled with random action scenes that makes you care less for the film. The movie had actors that tried their best with what they had to work with which wasn't much to begin with. It starts to bring you a story that you could be interested in and then takes it away with an overdrawn action sequence.
The plot of the film is that a virus broke out in scotland and the place was quarantined and England built a wall to protect themselves from the virus. They send in military to check out the virus and find a cure and thats where it starts to really get out of hand with action scenes that are way too long and that are boring. There was even a complete scene that wasn't necessary which was like a concert with out having anbody sing it just played music and they burned a man and started eating him. The movie just jumps around way too much and not making the storys worth your wild to watch.
This film should have just stayed as an idea until a better screenplay was written for it. It was boring and one of the worst films I have seen this year.
I never thought that a film that primarily focuses about drugs and three guys who smoke weed all the time could be a really great film but it was. The movie stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as Dale and Saul who are two slacker potheads and they play the part to the teeth. They seem like they are being natural in their parts and together they are hilarious. The way that they play off of each other its like they have known each other for years. Well they actually have known each other for years because they were working together on the short lived tv show Freaks and Geeks. Freaks and Geeks was also produced by the producer of this film Judd Apatow. The third sort of main character is Saul's drug dealer Red played by Danny R. McBride and when all three of them are together it always get into a crazy set of events that make you laugh. Gary Cole is in this film as Ted Jones who is a major druglord who controls a police officer Carol played by Rosie Perez.
Going into the theater I had no idea what the film was truly about because the trailers never gave me enough to work with to figure it out and I loved that. The film is about Dale who is a process server whose job is to go around serving people subpoenas all day. In between serving different people he smokes weed until he runs out and needs more. So now he goes to his dealer Saul who has a rare weed called Pineapple Express and sells it to him. As Dale is about to serve the last person he had to that day he witnesses a murder by a man and a police officer. So now he has to run and stay alive while they try to track him down.
So without revealing any more of the film I just want to say it was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing from the opening sequence to the final shot. I haven't laughed so hard from a movie in so long. This is one of the best buddy action comedies I have seen in a very long time. I recommend this film for anyone looking for a good laugh at the theaters.
