While Theron and Oswalt both put on stellar performances, I found myself laughing throughout the movie and not because it was funny but just to break up the awkward tension that is pervasive in Young Adult. If Cody's intention was to make her audience feel awkward, uncomfortable and root for the credits to roll so they do not have to suffer anymore with the emotional train wreck that is the main character, then mission accomplished. Cody's take on middle class, small town America makes you want to smother yourself with a pillow.
