It is really hard not to think of Lord of the Rings movies when watching this movie. How can you make a movie like this kowing people are going to compare them, and not take the time or spend the money to at least come in the same ballpark as LotR. This movie probably seemed great on paper in script form, but the execution was not that great. The dragon special effects were good (not great) but thats about it. They must have spent all the money on the dragon because the rest of the movie looks pretty cheesy. The actors do what they can, but with a bad script and bad dialogue, it just comes out bad. My kids liked it, and maybe thats what the makers were going for, but the adults will be pretty bored. I actually fell asleep for about ten minutes.
This is a movie I really wanted to like. When I saw the previews, I was really excited. It had Ben Stiller, it had first rate special effects, and it just looked really funny.
But I am sorry to say that I was disappointed. The movie for me never really had much heart. The plot was as lame as can be. It was just one special effect after another (which were excellent), but that is not enough for me in a family movie like this. Ben Stiller was funny, and it made me laugh a few times, and the kids will like it, but for me it was just kind of boring.
